Election of Nicolas Sarkozy: a great leap backwards

By Dominique Voynet, Sunday 6 May 2007 at 20:00:: Place ideas

The voters have made their choice and I respect it.

The election of Nicolas Sarkozy is not good news for young people from the suburbs, under house arrest in their neighbourhoods, for the precarious ordered to "work harder" and generally to the more modest, pointing to the "weak links" in a competition without mercy.

Nor is it good news for the planet.
The programme of Nicolas Sarkozy, inspired by the neo-conservative revolution in the United States, does not fail to acknowledge the environmental challenge.
We are running the risk of further delays, further damage.
Oil and arms dealers, seed companies and staffs of water, and pharmaceutical industries bétonneurs ... All supported Nicolas Sarkozy, all require dividends them, the right to deregulate, and the precarious pollute without hindrance!

Our children will live in the middle of this century the effects of the environmental crisis: climate change, resource depletion, the extinction of many species, the north-south divide ...
We can not afford to lose five years, to imagine what our lives will be tomorrow, to invent solutions that will allow us to build a more fraternal society and more accountable, to break the company of all waste.
And it's not by returning to France for 68 before that we can prepare for the future.

I invite environmentalists not to stand idly by, the image of elected Greens, who are fighting in the cities and regions, for the choices that prepare future generations.

On 10 and 17 June, I call on citizens to elect deputies Greens without which the National Assembly will continue to make the laws as if tomorrow would look like yesterday.

The time will come soon when it will be up to the Greens as to all democrats who refuse the hand-setting of a one-party political life in France, to draw the consequences of the failure of today, in terms of Organising as in terms of the project.
Far from the artificial divisions between left government, quick to deny when she took office, and a radical left, which refuses to be carefully put in a position to exercise it, we must resist, with the aim of protecting the most modest, which will be the first casualties of the measures taken by the new government, we must restore the threads of dialogue with citizens, broken for a long time and never really resumed, we must renew our in-depth reflection.

One thing is certain: There will be no shortcut to win tomorrow, the left - and environmentalists - should learn from the lessons of their failure.
